In 1954, James Kirkwood Jr. began the family business by leasing the Atlantic Service Station at 7328 East Main Street from Atlantic Refining and Marketing Corp. Three years later, in 1957, he purchased the property and became an owner/operator with an Atlantic franchise.

In 1960, Mr. Kirkwood purchased the adjacent property, which was later used to house the office and warehouse space needed for our oil company. Atlantic Refining and Marketing approached him in 1962 about becoming a contract distributor of gasoline and heating oil. The same year, he built a bulk storage facility and began this venture. One year later, in order to gain more control over the company, he became a full distributor.

Kirkwood Heating Oil Company became incorporated in 1975 with James Kirkwood Jr. as majority stockholder and president. In 1983, the company was approached by Lima Oil, Inc. with an offer to buy their business. After short negotiations, the purchase was complete and the customer base of Kirkwood Heating Oil, Inc. doubled.

James Kirkwood Jr. retired in 1986, at which time all his responsibilities fell to his son James D. Kirkwood. This same year, our service department was established to perform furnace repairs. In 1991, Kirkwood Oil, Inc. purchased Hanrahan Gas & Oil, Inc. and again welcomed the opportunity to expand its customer base.

In 2000, Kirkwood Energy Products added Propane to our list of products that we offer to our customers.

Now under the management of James' son David, Kirkwood Energy Products is proud to stay on the leading edge of ever-changing technologies and industry standards. With our own bulk storage facility, full fleet of self-serviced trucks and vans, friendly and knowledgeable staff and desire to keep abreast of the continually changing energy climate, we have become established as a reliable and respected company. Our one constant throughout our over fifty years in business has been our attentiveness to the customer. Whether a burgeoning company in the 1960s with a few customers or a 21st century distributor with a multi-county delivery zone, our focus remains fixed on the satisfaction of those we serve. As our history proudly defines us, we value both our ability to stay current and our customers' loyalty to our ideals.
